At last, I can share with you my upcoming book, Chasing Fog.
You’ve been with me throughout the book writing journey—from the beginning, a time for tuning in to the whispers of the universe and hearing murmured stories on the wind, right up to submission, when the huge Wolf Moon lingered long into the morning as I sent the finished manuscript to my editor and agent. You were with me when a note came in from the copyeditor that read ‘for me, reading this book was a path to re-enchantment’ and now I can finally show you the finished book with its dreamy cover.
Chasing Fog will be published by Simon & Schuster on 29th August. This is how they describe it:
At first, I didn’t find fog – fog found me.
Liminal, transformative and increasingly elusive – far from a simple cloud of water droplets, fog is a state of mind. As mist drifted through a copse of trees, turning a familiar place strange and otherworldly, Laura Pashby snapped a photograph and an obsession began.
Pashby hunts for fog, walks and swims in it, explores its often pivotal role in literature, mythology and history, as well as its environmental significance. There has been a 50 per cent drop in 'fog events' in the past fifty years, fog is drifting away without us noticing and the ecological impact could be calamitous.
As she journeys to the foggiest places she can find, Pashby immerses herself in Dartmoor’s dangerous fog, searches for the Scottish haar, experiences Venice’s magical mist, tell us the myths behind the River Severn’s fog and the shipwrecks it hides.
It’s easy to get lost in fog, but sometimes it’s where imperceptible things can be found, including in ourselves. Chasing Fog is a captivating meditation on fog and mist, a love song to weather and nature’s power to transform.
Chasing Fog was selected as a non-fiction Editor’s Choice for August in the Bookseller.
The best way to support any author is to pre-order their book, and I’d be beyond thrilled if you would pre-order Chasing Fog.
You can also pre-order it from your favourite indie bookshop (and as an indie bookseller myself, I can tell you that we do love pre-orders) or request it from your local library. If you’re not in the UK, Blackwells offer free worldwide delivery. Hang on to your receipt as I’ll be offering a special Substack pre-order bonus.
I have so much more to tell you about Chasing Fog, but for now, to celebrate today’s cover reveal, I’ve removed the paywall from every post in my popular series for paid subscribers The Feeling of Writing a Book, in which I share the secrets of my book-writing journey from first whispers to final edits.
You’ll find them all here (scroll down to start at the beginning with Stories on the Wind).
Thank you for reading,

What a stunning cover!
Laura, the misty paths you tread bring to mind the delicate dance of light and shadow in forgotten places. Your pursuit of fog seems to capture not just the ethereal, but the fleeting nuances of our own reflections. Perhaps, as fog veils the world, it also reveals the hidden contours of our own thoughts.
Congratulations on this poignant exploration.
